Medellin inaugurates LPG service station

11 Aug, 2022

  • After inaugurating the first LPG station in 2021 in Cartagena, Terpel has once again confirmed its commitment to being the supplier of the best energy for keeping the country moving by opening a new LPG service station in Medellin.
  • Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is a fuel that generates fewer polluting particles, and has a lower cost and better mileage, therefore making it an important energy source for improving air quality in the region.
  • Terpel will promote the conversion to LPG of 200 vehicles in Medellin, through partnerships with maintenance shops.

In line with its purpose of supplying the best energy for keeping the country moving, in Medellin, Terpel inaugurated the first service station to provide the public with liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), also known as autogas.

The point of sale is located at the Las Mercedes station, and is the company’s second such station in Colombia. The first one, inaugurated in Cartagena in 2021, has had sales of 22,000 liters per month during the first year, demonstrating significant interest in this new environmentally-friendly fuel.

LPG, a blend of propane, butane and other gases in smaller proportions, is characterized by its excellent mileage, low cost, and reduced emissions of contaminating particles. Classified as a transition fuel, it has become a widely-used energy source around the world, used by an estimated 27 million vehicles according to the World LPG Association.

With the goal of helping improve air quality in Medellin, and promoting the use of this fuel in that city, Terpel, as a Country Partner, will create incentives for the conversion of 200 vehicles to this technology, through alliances with authorized shops there.

The expansion of autogas is part of the long-term objective of Organización Terpel to make a contribution to the country’s migration to a low-carbon-emissions energy system, because LPG’s particle emissions are 81% lower and it produces 21% less CO2 than other fuels, while providing the same power and performance as a gasoline-powered engine. In addition, in terms of range, a vehicle with 40 liters of autogas can travel approximately 140 kilometers in the city and 350 kilometers on the highway, giving drivers the ability to travel long distances.

“For Terpel, entering the LPG market is a milestone in our history and in the transformation of Colombian mobility. We are proud to offer a broad range of services and products, enabling us to accompany cities like Medellin in its energy transition, and help meet this great challenge we face as a country of migrating toward a low-carbon-emissions mobility system,” highlighted Jeronimo Gonzalez, Service Stations Manager at Terpel.

There are currently 800 vehicles in Colombia that have converted to LPG.
